John Carroll University seeks an experienced student affairs professional for the position
of Vice President for Student Affairs. John Carroll University is a private, coeducational,
Jesuit Catholic university providing programs in the liberal arts and sciences, education,
and business. Founded in 1886, and with an enrollment of approximately 3,075 undergraduate
and 690 graduate students, John Carroll University has been listed in US News & World Report
magazine’s top-ten rankings of Midwest regional universities for 19 consecutive years.
The campus is situated in University Heights, Ohio, an attractive residential suburb ten miles
from both Lake Erie and the thriving metropolitan city of Cleveland.

The Vice President provides vision, leadership, and management oversight for the Student
Affairs division. Reporting to the President, the Vice President is expected to serve as an effective
advocate for student constituents, enhance the learning environment and the quality of the student
experience, partner with academic colleagues to foster and sustain an integrated educational program,
and visibly participate in the formal and informal life of the campus community. In support of the
Jesuit educational mission of the University, the Vice President promotes academics and intellectual
inquiry, service, social justice, the development of the whole person, and an inclusive community
in which diversity and equal opportunity are fostered and affirmed.

The position oversees 158 full and part-time employees, and administers an annual operating budget
of approximately $8 million. The Vice President for Student Affairs provides supervision for thirteen
units: Athletics and Recreation; Campus Ministry; Campus Safety Services; Counseling Center;
Dean of Students; Dean of Student Development; Developmental Programming; Liturgical Music
and Musical Arts; Residence Life; Services for Students with Disabilities; Multicultural Affairs;
Student Activities; and the Student Heath Center.

The successful candidate will have a master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in higher education
administration or a similar field. She or he must also possess the following qualifications:
progressive experience within student affairs with preference given to applicants having
senior-level experience; a successful record of administration including planning, budgeting,
personnel management, facility management, and program development; demonstrated experience
integrating student affairs and academic affairs; strong written and oral communication skills;
excellent supervisory skills; the ability to develop and sustain a campus community that values
and promotes diversity; demonstrated experience with assessment, strategic planning, and
managing organizational change; the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff,
and external stakeholder groups; demonstrated understanding of student development theory
and student leadership; strong crisis management skills; and an understanding of national trends
and best practices. The successful candidate must have an appreciation for, and be able to
contribute to, the Jesuit mission and heritage of John Carroll University.
