The position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success (AVC-Student Success) is a new student
affairs leadership position with responsibility for creating a forward-thinking, futuristic, and visionary
unit aimed at enhancing student success & leading retention efforts in the areas of policy development,
academic services, and support in students’ social and academic transition. Responsibilities include
oversight of the Academic Success Advising Center, Career Center, Learning Resource Center
(tutoring and supplemental instruction), Disability Resources and Services, Student Orientation,
Student Support Services (TRIO), and Veteran Student Services on all UCD campuses.
The officer reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (chief student affairs
officer). The position will provide guidance for designing an effective institutional environment as well
as strategies enhancing student success and improving retention and graduation rates. This officer will
guide the implementation of best programmatic and policy practices for a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive
learning community, while working closely with the new Vice Provost and Associate Vice Chancellor
for Diversity and Inclusion on the retention of diverse populations. The AVC-Student Success will
create a consolidated Office of Student Success Services and provide effective services at both
campuses, recognizing that student recruitment and retention issues are different for the two campuses
.
This position directly serves as an appointing authority, manages a budget of $1.5 million, and is
responsible for 19 staff, including five direct reports.
The successful candidate will possess, minimally, a master’s degree preferably in educational leadership
or higher education and a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in a higher
education institution within the area of student services and/or campus life. In addition, the position
requires a proven track record of exceptional leadership in student affairs, and demonstrated ability
to lead programs focused on improving student persistence and graduation rates. The successful
candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to lead
programs focused on student engagement, student learning, and student development; strong and
consistent student advocacy in developing policies and programs; documented experience in
developing, implementing, and evaluating unit goals/strategic planning; and evidence of building
partnerships with academic departments and faculty.
A commitment to diversity and inclusion; an understanding of wellness and mental health issues
related to a university campus; experience with emergency response system implementation; an
interest to fully engage an academic health sciences center; and familiarity with the mission of a
comprehensive urban university will also be important for the successful candidate.
