Carthage College invites applications and nominations for the position
of Dean of Students. The Dean reports to the Vice President for
Enrollment and Student Life, and has responsibility for the daily
leadership, management and administration of the Student Affairs
areas of the College. As a senior member of the Student Affairs staff,
the Dean of Students will provide active leadership in planning, goal
setting, decision-making, policy formation, professional staff supervision
and crisis management.

The Dean of Students office enjoys an interactive and collaborative
relationship with faculty members and other college staff. The areas
reporting to the Dean of Students include: housing and residence life,
first-year academic advising, judicial affairs, health and counseling center,
Greek life, student activities, leadership development, multi-cultural affairs,
and orientation and new student services.

The successful candidate will possess:
* a passion for working with students and creating a meaningful
college experience;
* a thorough understanding of the role of student affairs at a small,
private, liberal arts institution;
* a demonstrated knowledge of the role of student affairs in advancing
institutional goals;
* evidence of ability to make sound decisions and work within established
priorities;
* demonstrated effectiveness in staff supervision;
* a Master's or Doctoral degree in an appropriate field, and a record of
progressively responsible experience in student affairs.

Desired qualifications also include proven experience in crisis intervention
and management; the ability to communicate effectively and collaborate
with all constituencies associated with the College; and a confident,
team-oriented approach to leadership.

Compensation includes a competitive salary, a comprehensive health plan,
paid vacation and participation in a generous retirement plan.

Primarily a residential college, Carthage is situated on the shore of Lake
Michigan midway between Milwaukee and Chicago. Predominately
Midwesterners, students come from approximately half the states in the
Union, and a variety of foreign countries. Founded in 1847, Carthage is
a liberal arts institution affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America.
