The flagship campus of the Commonwealth’s university system, the University of
Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) is a major research university enrolling 24,000

ten schools and colleges offering 88 undergraduate majors, 68 master’s degree programs,
, and 48 doctoral programs. The university is located on 1,450 acres in the scenic Pioneer
Valley of western Massachusetts. UMass Amherst houses 12,000 students in 45 buildings.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Associate
Director of Housing and Residence Life for Facilities is responsible for strategic development
and master planning while directing all capital planning including facility renovations and
modernization activities for the Amherst campus residence halls and family apartments.
The Associate Director’s planning responsibilities will include residential facility capital
improvement program development and space management while the facilities responsibilities
will include construction project design, facilities engineering, and interior design development
. This newly created position will serve as a member of the Housing and Residence
Life Leadership Team.

The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in architecture, planning, or a related
field with at least seven years of professional facilities experience - license preferred, or an
advanced degree with at least six years of experience, preferably in a large residential university
setting. The ideal candidate must have knowledge of the principles of architecture and facilities
planning as well as local, state, and federal regulations governing health, safety, building codes,
and ADA statutes. The successful candidate must have construction project management or
other supervisory experience.

The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated knowledge of student residential facilities;
the ability to apply the broad vision of the institution including its goals and objectives to
all aspects of university housing; exceptional communication skills (both written and oral)
evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries
incorporating complex, highly technical information; strong planning, organizational, and
implementation skills, including the ability to develop and execute short- and long-range
planning; the ability to monitor major capital projects; the ability to prepare financial
analyses and ensure that fiscal objectives are met; and a working knowledge of all
applicable computer software including facilities management software programs,
and financial and budgeting principles.
