Director of Auxiliary Services

Michigan State University, an AAU, Big Ten land-grant institution, seeks an experienced auxiliary,
hospitality and food services professional for the position of Director of Auxiliary Services.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Housing & Food Services, this Executive Management
position provides leadership for the operation and management of a broad array of campus auxiliary
operations, serves as an integral member of the Division’s executive leadership team, as well as
building and maintaining crucial and complex university partnerships. As an institution,
Michigan State is home to 45,000 students engaged in undergraduate, graduate and graduate-
professional programs. Located in East Lansing, MI., three miles from the state capitol,
Michigan State is 80 miles from Detroit, 210 miles from Chicago, and 90 miles from the shores
of Lake Michigan.

The Director of Auxiliary Services provides vision, leadership, and management oversight for a
comprehensive and complex portfolio of auxiliary operations. The position administers the operation
of the central food stores and bakery commissary that support the largest self-operated university
food service in the nation serving over 50,000 meals per day. Additional auxiliary operations include
the MSU Student Union (should understand and have an appreciation of student development and
programming for students and the campus community), University Concessions, nineteen retail
outlets, Catering Services, Laundry Services, the Jack Breslin Student Events Center (a 16,000
seat educational and entertainment facility, home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams),
Forest Akers Golf Courses (two championship 18-hole courses), the MSU Tennis Center (8 indoor
courts), and the Alumni Chapel. The Director of Auxiliary Services maintains contractual oversight
for the Division including beverages, concessions suppliers, vending, two food courts and the
campus bookstore. The Director of Auxiliary Services has 8 direct reports and oversees a staff of
140 full-time, 60 part-time, and 500 student employees, and manages a $54 million annual
operating budget. The Division of Housing & Food Services is responsible for over 8,000,000
square feet of revenue-producing space.

It will be important for the Director of Auxiliary Services to make robust use of direct reports in
the day-to-day management of operations, and work collaboratively to develop operational business
plans. Also necessary is the ability and desire to participate as a contributing member of the Division
of Housing & Food Services executive management team whose strategic planning and initiatives will
shape the future of the Division and have far-reaching impacts for the University. The Director of
Auxiliary Services will shape an environment in which inclusion and diversity are fostered and affirmed.
The Division of Housing and Food Services is an integral contributor to degree-oriented residential
academic programs and colleges.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree (master's preferred) in business, hospitality
services, higher education administration, or a similar field, with a minimum of eight years of progressive
experience (preferably at a senior managerial level) in one or more of the following areas: auxiliary
services, event/facility management, food service management, hospitality services, purchasing,
warehousing and distribution.

S/he must also possess the following qualifications: strong business skills including financial
management, analysis, budgeting, and forecasting; a “Good-to-Great” executive management
philosophy with the ability to think in a progressive and collaborative manner; a successful record
of administration including assessment, strategic planning and program development; experience
supervising a large cohort of professional, union and student staff; excellent interpersonal,
communication and team building skills; the ability to resolve complex conflict situations while
maintaining a service atmosphere that is effective, efficient, flexible, and fiscally sound; the ability
to partner in a campus community that values and promotes diversity; demonstrated ability
to analyze, evaluate, and problem-solve; and the ability to organize and prioritize to meet demands
and expectations. Participatory experience with facility construction and renovation planning a plus.
