The University of California, Berkeley is a leading public research and academic institution
in the world. It enrolls 34,000 students in courses offered through 130 academic departments.
The Office of Student Development is sited within Residential and Student Service Programs
(RSSP), which is a part of the Student Affairs Division. RSSP is one of the largest departments
at UC Berkeley with over 2,000 employees and a $120 million annual budget.
The Executive Director of the Office of Student Development is responsible for supporting
the academic mission of the University through four main areas: Residential Living,
New Student Services, Academic Services, and Family Programs. The position supervises
over 50 career staff and 600 student staff and oversees the administrative/programmatic
operations of 28 single student residences housing 6,000 students, and two family housing
communities of 2,000 residents. The Executive Director coordinates strategic planning and
the development of multi-unit goals and objectives, and supports the academic/developmental
needs of residential students.
The Executive Director coordinates significant interactions with numerous academic and
student service departments, and provides leadership for the campus on issues related to
student transitions, co-curricular programs and services, and crisis management (mental health
emergencies, safety/security situations, and natural disasters). The Executive Director
maintains significant public relations responsibilities and interprets policies to students,
parents, faculty, administrators, the media, and campus neighbors. The position manages
an annual operating budget of $5 million. As a member of the Associate Vice Chancellor’s
senior leadership team, the Executive Director participates in the overall planning and
decision-making for Residential and Student Service Programs.
Candidates must possess a master’s degree (doctorate preferred), and a minimum of 10 years
experience in residential, student development, or student transition programs, including
5 years residential life experience at the assistant director level or above.
The successful candidate must also demonstrate experience in the following areas: knowledge
and application of student and leadership development theory; broad understanding of
management, administration, organizational development, fiscal planning, residential living
programs, and human resource management; knowledge of issues affecting new and continuing
students; counseling, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student conduct, multicultural/
educational programming, academic support, and safety and security programs; excellent oral
and written communication skills; experience working in large institutions; experience integrating
faculty into student living communities; supervision of programs that support and retain
underrepresented student populations; and experience with first year experience and transitional
programs. Candidates must be attuned to and aware of issues of difference, power, and privilege,
and how those issues manifest themselves in college settings.
