Bucknell University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Students. Founded in 1846,
Bucknell is a highly selective, private, residential university with a deep commitment to the liberal arts. Bucknell
educates its students for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership, characterized by intellectual exploration,

to further diversify its student, faculty, and staff populations. Bucknell enrolls 3,600 undergraduates engaged in
liberal arts programs, and 160 graduate students in professional programs in engineering, management, education,
and music. Bucknell’s beautiful 450-acre campus is located in historic Lewisburg, PA, approximately three hours
from Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Serving Bucknell University as the senior student affairs officer and reporting to the Provost, the Dean of Students
provides creative vision and leadership for all student affairs programs and activities. Central to the University’s
mission, the Dean champions an institutional atmosphere in which holistic student learning is encouraged and
fostered, and in which students’ curricular and co-curricular experiences meld to support academic and personal
success. The Dean is highly visible and maintains strong connections with a broad array of stakeholder groups,
facilitating communication among students, faculty, staff, parents, and external constituents. The Dean models
an active commitment to diversity and inclusion, advocacy for the quality of student life, enthusiasm for the
profession, and the talent to incorporate best practices into the organizational culture. The Dean supports the
general wellbeing and vitality of the institution, and works with Bucknell’s senior administrators to develop
and execute the university-wide strategic educational vision and institutional goals.
The Dean of Students is responsible for long-range planning, policy development and implementation, and
the general management of a comprehensive student affairs division including: residential education, housing
operations, fraternity/sorority affairs, new student orientation, campus activities and programs, judicial affairs,
health services, psychological services, religious and spiritual life, multicultural student services, international
student services, women’s resource center, sexual assault advocacy/response, LGBT awareness, and outdoor
education. The Dean of Students has nine direct reports, oversees 37 exempt staff, 12 non-exempt staff,
numerous student employees, and administers a budget of $2 million.
Candidates must possess a master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in college student personnel administration,
higher education administration, or a similar field with progressively responsible leadership experience in
student affairs. The successful candidate will also possess a strong record of administration, including experience
in program assessment and strategic planning; proficiency with organizational development and managing
organizational change; the ability to link student affairs initiatives to the university’s goals of developing
students’ intellectual maturity, character, integrity, and responsibility; a collaborative work style and expertise
in creating partnerships with a broad array of internal and external constituents; demonstrated knowledge of
student conduct, legal issues and crisis/emergency management; the ability to lead, motivate, and supervise
a large and diverse staff; excellent oral/written communication and presentation skills; effectiveness in budget
planning and management; a demonstrated commitment to diversity and the ability to develop inclusive
communities; an understanding of issues facing today’s college students; the ability to be innovative in shaping
student affairs programs and services; a high standard of integrity and excellent judgment; and adaptability,
flexibility, and an affable and engaging interpersonal style.
